what is svchost.exe HELP

Does anyone have any idea what svchost.exe is? My computer is suddenly on
the verge of a crash. It is unbelievably slow. I am running XP with IE 6.0.
When I bring up the windows task manager, there is an application by that
name that is using 99% of the CPU. Now I am pretty computer illiterate, but
I think I know that must be what is making it so slow. I have run
my Norton antivirus which I keep updated and it says no virus. Please
help.........Barb

Hello Barb,

Svchost.exe is a normal part of your XP system. Many Windows services run
under the svchost.exe process.
Having said that, there is one or more programs or services that is taking
up a large amount of CPU time.

Have any new programs been added to the system lately? Any new software
drivers for system hardware?

We can "Clean Boot" Windows XP to help us determine what may be causing the
problem.
