The file extension "idx" is most often used to identify an index
file, either of a directory, a compressed file comprised of multiple
compressed files, or a database.
As AOL generally ignores normal software and Internet standards,
however, there's really no telling what it means in this particular
case. Ask AOL's widely-publicized Tech Support.

Is it saying the main.idx file is damaged when you try to start AOL?
If so there is a backup copy of that file located in the AOL folder
tree. Its in Program Files\America Online 9.0\Backup Just copy the
backup file to the main AOL folder and you should be good to go.
Btw...You might want to consider sticking with AOL 8 instead of 9. 9
has a lot of little hidden things it installs and hooks into your
Operating system. (It has at least 3 hooks into Explorer) Also AOL
seems to think that all their services are extremely important and
should be started and run all the time on your system. (Even when you
are not using AOL)
