What is dumprep.exe?

This on occassions brings my laptop and PC to a halt churning up CPU.
I'm sure it happens when an application has just failed or had to be
closed forcefully.

Can I just stop this process in Task Manager?
Or is ti doing something really impoartant!?

Thanks.

Hi OM,

This is needed by Microsoft to help issue Hotfixes to fix the problems
found.

Dumprep creates error reports when apps run into problems, and in situations
where you terminate an unresponsive app. You can stop it if you don't want
to see the error report, but don't disable it.

Dumprep running is far less a problem than *why* it launched - it's in
reaction to a problem. It is logging faults, and you probably do want to
know why the faults are occurring.

You should take a look in the Event Log to see if you can find out *why*
dumprep is running. Dumprep will only run or use lots of CPU cycles
when it is preparing an error report, after the report is prepared
Dumprep will ask you if you want to send an error report to Microsoft.
Dumprep is not a necessary component and it can easily be disabled, see
the information here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899870 Note that
the cause listed there doesn't necessarily apply to you.
