What is CHKDSK and why does it keep appearing on my PC?

One day I started up my PC, and after Windows XP started up, a blue CHKSDK
screen appeared that said 'One or more volumes need to be checked for
consistency.'

File system is NTFS, Volume Label is Drive 2

Then it went through checking my disk, found a bad sector with some crap in
it, and fixed it. Cool, I logged in to Windows, no problem.

However, every day I turn on my PC CHKDSK runs, and usually it doesn't find
any bad sectors or crap. Why does it keep running? It appeared one day
without me running it - so why does it keep showing up?

Try this: go to Start -> Run and type in chkntfs /X C:
Then press Enter.
Restart your computer.

If that doesn't work then go here:
Disabling and Enabling Scandisk and Chkdsk during the boot sequence:
http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/disable-scandisk-chkdsk.htm

But before you do this you should back up your registry:

chkdsk is Microsoft's Check Disk utility - it checks the hard drive errors
and then if it finds any it attempts to repair any damaged information.

Go to Kelly's site at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
Click on "C" and scroll to Check Disk - Disk Checking Runs Upon Boot
for some troubleshooting tips.

Also to check the health of the drive download a drive diagnostic utility
from the hard drive manufacturer's web site. That will create a bootable
floppy or CD. Run the diagnostics from there. Make sure you have a full
and complete backup of important information.
