What is best way to download updates in this situation.

My dial up connection from that dreadful Telco means that I can't get
broadband & am stuck with a 28KPS. speed. Downloads from everywhere are
extremely slow & the windows updates take the longest. To make matters
worse I also have to update my wifes laptop which means everything must
be done twice.

What alternatives are there to doing this? I understand that it might
be possible to somehow retain a download & then apply it to more than
one machine. How is this done?

Can I get a list of what new downloads are available & then get someone
else who has broadband to download & save them to say a thumbdrive for
me to install latter? Any other ideas?

The dreadful telco is Telstra.

That link takes me to a site where I have to know what to look for. Are
you suggesting something along the lines of having Windows Update tell
me what new updates are available that aren't already on my machine then
make a note of them & then try to download them from that site? I'm
assuming that this site allows me to save each download so I can install
it on both my PC & wifes laptop. Is this correct?

Go to the WU site, scan the computer to see what updates are required and
then you can download the same and install on your computer and if applicable
your wife's computer.

Apart from the link previously given for the WU catalog - there is also -
