What is "author.exe"?

Hello,

Can someone tell me what "author.exe" is and what function it performs. When
checking out the logs of mysites on my web host, I see that this file is
usually within the top three requested files, and logs some of the most
hits.

I'm sure it has to do with the FrontPage extensions, but I'm not sure what
function it performs.

Is it used primarily during upload, to check authenticity of the user? Look
at this list of top requested files in my site. Author.exe is #3 most
requested. I'm just curious as to why.

Pretty much every time you save or "do" something with FrontPage author.exe
gets a hit that shows in your log. So you could get quite a few of them or
it could be your hit if the site does not have much traffic.

As long as the user associated with those hits is someone authorized, and it
comes from an IP you can identify as "making sense" then it's OK.
