I tried to open an e-mail from my neice which is a word doc and word told me
I needed a converter to open it and asked if I wanted to install it which I
clicked on yes and tried to do and it told me the import coverter was
unavalable so I went to office 2003 downloads and downloaded a converter pack
but that didn't work either....any suggestions?? Couldn't find "import
converter"

Word does not require an additional converter to open Word documents. This
error message is usually an indication that the document is corrupt. Do not
attempt top open the document from the e-mail message, but first save it to
the hard drive and open from there. If that fails also, get your niece to
zip the document and resend it. Zipped documents are less likely to be
corrupted in the e-mail process.

I had the same trouble as Doug, only from Word files I had created on another
pc and moved. These were indeed .doc Word files, but I found this condition
was triggered when trying to open those silly, small, extraneous files of the
same name as the real files, except preceeded by a "._"
My solution was to simply find the correct file.
