What is Access exactly

Is it a database? I've never used one before but would like to learn. But
I'm a newbie when it comes to this, so forgive me if it's a dumb question.

Access is a relational database product. It comes with a sample database
called "northwind" that lets you see some of the capabilities. There are
many other templates on the Microsoft website.

Perfect first question. Some people think the answer is a 'fancy
spreadsheet'. If you have never used one, the next best question is -
"What is a database?". You'd be surpised at how detailed the answer

Except that Access is much more than a database engine. It's also an
application development platform. More specifically, it's an
application that bundles a database engine (Jet) with an application
development platform (based on VBA) into a single application that
makes it very easy to build database applications, both simple and
complex.

The data can be stored in just about any format you want and you can
still keep the front end application.

This latter point is that part that many of the wankers who
criticize Access do not comprehend.
