what instead of fixboot

probably due to virus affecting boot sector as well, win98 disk wont
boot or even be accesed when in another win XP PC any more although
it can be seen in bios.
Read a post saying fixboot can change fat type and screw up file
system if virus had changed the fat signature the fixboot relies on so
which tool would you suggest at least to fix the boot sector
temporarily (to try some other antivirus)?
I found avboot from win2k cd but it is not updated by ca.com any more
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/core/fnhb_trb_cwsz.mspx?mfr=true
and http://invircible.com/iv_tools.php#Ivinit
but it seems it has to run off the sick disk which might not be
possible
Do you think it is safe to try it from boot floppy which is its
suggested method for cleaning nt/xp mbr?

Fix boot ain't going to do it, you need to run fdisk on it like:
FDISK /MBR
run that from your Win98 boot disk.

Running FDISK will show if your disk is even accessible.

boot from either XP slipstreamed CD or "gold" XP CD into recovery console
and do fixboot. If you have to multiboot temporarily I would use OSL2000
to access whichever opsys. grub or lilo can also be used, though if they
stop playing nice with XP, go back and do a FIXBOOT.
