I should also tell you that there is still a website where you can get
drivers for their tape drives. Its a shame, the 30 and 50GB tape drives
were really popular and as far as I know they worked quite well. Check
ebay for tape media for those drives, there is still a lot out there.

They basically screwed themselves--the real market for tape is the
"enteprise" market, and their first generation drives used a
semiproprietary command set that worked only with the backup software that
they provided--Arcserve and Backup Express despite promises never supported
them on all platforms so effectively they were closed out of that market.
Later generations of drive corrected this but it was too little and too
late.

They also suffered from the major weakness of Travan drives--expensive
media.
