Two part question, please.

Recent user of XP

1) What happened to charmap.exe ? Is there a similar replacement
with another name?

2) I installed XP in a second partition, with Win98SE in the first
partition. In XP when I went Start/Run/charmap, it exectuted fine but
seems to have used the only version there is, in my C partition?

Is my C:\Windows folder part of my XP "path"? Is my D:\Windows folder
also part of the path? I presume D comes first, right.

I would have expected it to ignore the C partition when an implied
"path" was needed.

Thanks a lot.

Nothing happened to it. It's still there, with the same name.

But using charmap is a very awkward process. I have a much better
suggestion for you.

I use a little freeware background program called AllChars. This lets
me type many common special characters (many of these are used in
other languages) by pressing the ctrl key followed by a two character
mnemonic combination.

For example, for ñ the two characters are ~ and n. For ç it's c and ,
For ü it's u and "

charmap is where it's always been in XP: %SystemRoot%\System32\charmap.exe

What makes you think that when you run charmap while booted into XP that
it's using the executable located in your 98se partition?

If you properly installed WinXP in a separate partition, it shouldn't
know or care what's in other partitions.

If you're curious about your path in WinXP, open System Properties >
Advanced tab > Environment Variables. Either double click the Path
entry or "Edit" it to see all of the path.

Alternately, from a Command Prompt window type

Path {enter}

I figured it would still be there, but when I used the XP provided
Search, according to it in the C and D partitions, it only found the C
version. And when I looked in D:\Windows, correspondding to where it
was in win98 in C:\Windows, it wasnt' there!

Thank you very much. That does sound easier. I'll check it out.

BTW, you folks don't know a built-in or add-on Mac program that
displays the fonts do you. I'm also trying to explain fonts to a Mac
friend.

Font Book is built into OS X.

There should be a (default) shortcut to the CharMap utility located on
your 'Start Menu' under :

(All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools

Well, it's there, and it works, but the XP search program, set on
Files C: and D:, didn't find it!! Well, I tried it a third time,
and it found it. ??

I vaguely thought the format had changed so I wanted to look at the
win98 version. I used the Windows Search function, which says it is
looking in the C and D partitions, and it only came up with one file
named charmap.exe , and that was in the C partition.

So I went there** and clicked on it, and nothing opened afaict, which
also made me think it was already open. I'm going to try that again
now when the XP one isn't open. Okay, this time nothing opened, or
was open. The cursor did blink however and then show a "sand timer"
(I forget the word.), but eventually that went away and nothing
opened.

**I guess I didn't have to "go there" first. I could have clicked on
the result in Search, but I did.

That's what I figured.

Thank you.

To follow up on my own reply, when I entered Path, several to be
expected D: directories came first in the Path, and then the five to
be expected C: directories, the ones from win98.

Thank you.
