What .exe loads the programs in the startup folder?

The other day, I tried to replace the windows shell with another app
(so that the windowsgui is completely hidden and the prgram runs right
away). when I restarted the computer, however, it came up with an error
message. This leads me to believe that explorer.exe loads certain files
that allow certain apps to work. Is this true? What should I do? I was
thinking that maybe there is an executable that loads the programs in
the startup folder, so i could set that as the shell. This might load
the necesary files and at the same time hide the windows gui. Does an
exe such as this exist? If not, can you recomend any other options?
Thanks.

Just thoughts, Explorer.exe is the windows GUI.

Download and run Process Explorer

Everything below explorer is what depends upon it running.

Already said, Explorer is the shell.

There are a few shell replacements for Windows. One of the things the shell
does is run the start up apps when you boot.

It provides the desktop, the taskbar, notification area and a clock. Any
replacement for it needs to do the same tasks. I have just-about finished a
shell I wrote called DDT. Some screenshots.

If you want to read up on it, shellcity.org is a good place to start.
