What does this mean in the head section?

What is the following? I recently split up a page into smaller pages, and
the new pages did not have this. The display on the new pages came out
messed up in normal view (FP 2000) although it was okay in preview mode.
When I put this back in, the normal display came out okay again. I notice
the word "categories." I formerly used categories but have discontinued
them.

It means you are using MS Office/Word or whatever to create web pages

instead of Front Page?

No. Most of my pages are copy-edited in Word, but all the html is done in
FP. This page, however, is my site map and was not done in Word at all. It's
also on my other pages, including pages that were never touched by Word. It
seems to affect the formatting of the links. If I take it out, all the links
on the page take on the formatting of my first list but only in normal view,
even if they have another formatting applied to them. I 'm curious.

If your original copy came from Word and you pasted it into FrontPage, this would create the xml code your seeing. This includes text as well as any graphics.

Thanks for the reply. I experimented by dragging a Word file onto a blank
page in FP, but I did not get this coding. I cannot make it happen. It's not
a big problem because it does not cause trouble, but I would like to know
what it is all about.

Okay, so the whole thing is what FP uses to keep track of categories,
approvals, and assignments. I don't use any of these things although I
formerly used categories. This may be why some pages have it and some don't.
All I need to keep is this much: <!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]-->. Then
everything will be okay. What I don't understand is why it messes up my
normal view if I take out this last little piece.

Just a quick comment:

This content has nothing to do with Word. It is generated when you assign
categories, or assign pages to people using the Page Properties > Work Group
tab. For example, you can create a table of contents based on the Category
assigned to one of your pages, and after you assign that page a category,
this is the code that is generated.

I have not seen any cases where either the existence or non-existence of
this code would mess up a page in normal view, so I have a feeling this is
not the cause.

I discovered by experiment that this has nothing to do with Word. I get
perfectly clean transfers from Word to FP just by dragging in the files. (If
anyone does not believe me, check out my site www.dipika.org. All the
articles were edited in word and then dragged in.)

Just below the top logo on my pages, I have a small navigation bar, which is
really a formatted list. On the pages with the problem, If I take out the
extra coding, all the links on the page take on the look of that first
formatted list. This can be maddening to work with if I am using other lists
because I cannot see the formatting of a new entry. But it's only in normal
view, and the pages come out okay when posted. It's not something impossible
to live with. I can just put the little piece of coding back in. It's just
that I hate to be defeated by something illogical.

If I ever find out the real answer, I'll post it here.

I do almost what this article says, but I just drag in the Word files and I
do not remove the formatting. If you want to look at some of my pages and
see whether I get extra coding, the url is www.dipika.org. So far, no one
who has looked at it has found extra coding.

I do my text editing and font formatting in Word because it is convenient. I
can use macros, autotext, correct-as-you-type, etc. I do absolutely no photo
layout or html in Word.

I'm sure it would save a lot of people a lot work if they knew they could do
this. Your italics, bolds, tables, and lists all come out intact, although
the tables and lists may require some extra formatting or css in FP to give
them just the look you want.
