what does the selection is locked mean?

Please help me, I cant add anymore text to a piece of work on word because at
the bottom it keeps telling me that the modification is not allowed because
the selection is locked and I need to get this piece of work in today.

This usually means that you (a) are using a trial version that has expired
or (b) have not activated a retail version.

A third possibility (though less likely) is that the selection contains a
content control which is protected from deletion.
