I am changing a style in my paragraph. I understand how to do that, but I
don't understand what the "Automatically Update" check box does.

It means please change my document in ways I can't predict or understand
when it will cause the most problems for me. You don't want to check it.

It means whenever the user changes the formatting of any paragraph that is
formatted in this style, please change all of the other paragraphs that are
formatted using the style the same way without asking the user. It is seldom
useful. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/WholeDocumentReformatted.htm.
