What does low virtual memory mean?

Weekly notices of virtual memory being low. What is it? Why so often?
 
Maybe you have a virus/malware that's taking up some of your
computer's brain. I believe virtual memory is a part of your hard
drive that your operating system uses to supplement the RAM.

It couldn't hurt to run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragment, too.
