What does "Invalid HPC File" mean?

Is there a way to open a file that sends the message: "Invalid HPC File"?
This message is showing up in files sent to me from another person via e-mail.
Should the sender be doing something to the files before they are sent to
prevent this message from appearing?

How you are opening the file? Directly from the email? Have you tried
saving the attachment and then in Word opening it using File/Open?
