Hi, I have a Sony laptop running XP,1.8 gig AMD processor, 256 ram and 60
gig drive. I used to protect it by the Zone Alarm FREE firewall, AVG FREE
virus detection, and Spybot FREE (what else?) spyware. It worked fine for
me. Then a friend told me about the AOL safety and security suite. (It is
also free, and I think it uses a version of Mcafee) It too has the firewall,
virus, and spyware detection, but it ran in the background so I didn't have
to update anything, it did it all! So I installed it and have not had any
problems. But now I'm wondering...do you think it is as good as what I had
before?

Frankly, I wouildn't put anything from AOL on any of my computers on a
dare. And, to make matters worse, you've completely turned the control
of the security of your computer over to strangers whose sole motivation
is profit.

That friend did you wrong.

I'm very leery of "Safety and Security" suites, because I don't believe any
one suite can adequately protect you on all fronts. I think you were better
off the way you were. AVG, Spybot, and ZoneAlarm also run in the background
if they are configured correctly, and offer protection, but as far as
automatic updates go, I'd rather do it myself. Some of those can be
configured to check for updates automatically, but I want to see and decide
for myself what gets installed on my computer.

Also, if indeed it does use a version of McAfee, *that* is also a resource
hog--almost in the same league as Symantec products.

Just my opinion.....
