after running in circles on the net, trying to find just the right
hardware for a new linux box, without burning a hole in my wallet, i
think i'm getting close.

below is the system i have come up with so far. what do you think? keep
in mind that this is just a desktop pc designed for surfing the net,
running productivity software and playing the occasional game or song.

ideally i would like to be able to add a drive with windows to it (so
the hardware should be able to run it), but that's purely for fun and
completely unnecessary - the primary os will be linux.

thank you for your help. have a wonderfull day.

i think you need to:

"keep in mind that this is just a desktop pc designed for surfing the net,
running productivity software and playing the occasional game or song"

are you trying to wind us up?

you could surf the net and do the other things on way less spec than a 64bit
amd!!!

Software controller or hardware controller? If a software controller,
they are a WinModem, and Linux, while making improvements for dealing
with these as Linmodems, you would be better off with something that has
a hardware controller.

ATI would be better. I am running an ATI RADEON 7000VE with Mandrake
9.2 without any problems. Saw it right away.

nVIDIA SoundStorm

Creative Labs would be better here. I use a Creative Labs SB Live 5.1
without any problems, running Mandrake 9.2.

Why don't you spring for some Mobile docks for your HD's. You then can
swap out any HD in seconds. Great for mirroring your HD to another HD
and then if you lose it, you haven't lost anything, and in seconds you
can be back up and running.

Once you start swaping out HDs, you wonder why you didn't think about it
sooner. LOL Have fun with Linux, I know that I do.

Go with an ATI card, nVIDIA is out...

....Ehum! No, not at all, actually.
For DX gaming, 9800XT reigns supreme, and the entire 9600 family
really kicks ass, but:

FX5200 is better than ATI9200 (at least it's possible to have an
argument about it).
FX5900 and in particular FX5900XT is very competitive on
performance/buck.
Finally, FX5700 remains the superiour choice, even in the mainstream
segment, for anyone needing serious OpenGL capability.
