What do I need to do to properly enter a Date?

I know this has got to be simple, and when I hear the answer I'll probably
kick myself.

When I type 1/1/2009 in a cell, why does it display 01/00/1900?

What can I change so this will work all of the time in Excel?

UNcheck "Transition Formula entry" in the Lotus Compatibility settings.
