When they do what you want, they make your task easier. When they don't do
exactly what you want, they make your task much harder (i.e., it is often
easier to start from scratch).

PowerPoint is like a well-stocked kitchen. It has enough utensils and
ingredients to make anything you've got the skill and imagination to cook up.
Wizards are like the drive-in window at Mickey D's. Limited range of choices
to start with, they ask you a few questions about a very limited range of
options and that's your meal plan.
If you're not much of a cook (or are just too tired or rushed to care or don't
need a fancy meal) wizards are great. They get you through the basics w/o your
having to learn a lot.
If you want something more, you'll need to cook it yourself.
That'll be my $.02. Would you like fries with that?
