What Did Vista Do Now

Hello all,

I boot up my computer and select Word to open Microsoft Word, but before I
even double-clicked the icon I noticed the name ended with either .Lnk or
Ink. So, Microsoft Word opens up and asks me what type of encoding I wish to
choose. I'm like dumb founded as to how I should answer a question I've
never been asked before whenever I opened Word. So, I look over the choices
and choose one, I don't remember which one.

Well, I shouldn't have done that because Vista changed every dam icon on my
desktop to the one used by Microsoft Word. Vista did the same thing to every
program listed in my Quick Launch. When I click on the Start button and
choose All Programs, every program icon has been changed to the one used by
Word.

But wait, it gets worse. Every application on the desktop, Quick Launch and
the Start button All Programs list runs Microsoft Word instead of it's
intended program. Now I have to open up Explorer and navigate to my
application folders in order to run my programs now.

Can somebody please tell me what the F*** happened. I am so freakin' pissed
off right now I'm ready to throw my PC out of the window. Is there a way to
return my PC to where it was before Vista lost it's mind.

Was that another "wow" experience when using Vista? Or was it a "oh shit"
experience?

Cheers.

Open System Restore
Select a restore point (date) before you performed your operation, select
restore and let the system reboot.

No near as bad as when ubuntu can't load the proper video driver and you

Well, of course, you never have to do that. Since the gui is
not monolithic to the OS you can simply start a command line login and
reconfigure X11.

Sort of like windows safe mode when you change video cards and
forget to uninstall the old one first.

Big Bad,

Already tried that and Vista's lying butt told me there weren't any restore
points to restore. That's bullcrap because I recall setting at least 3
restore points earlier this year. I'll tell you, when Vista craps on you it
does a dam good job of it.

If you even get that far before it crashes. For me, I don't get that far.

Only a total idiot like you Frankie Boy would resort to reinstalling the
whole os because you're too dumb to get your video driver properly
installed. Anyone with an IQ above that of a tape worm would NOT reinstall
to accomplish what you were unable to accomplish.

Cheers.

PS. See my sig for additional help you brain-dead p.o.s.

Ubuntu didn't have video driver for my video card you idiot.

You not that bright are you?

Nice try frankie, unfortunately that is simply not true. Worst case if you
don't get the right video driver the first time (which, by the way, I have
never seen happen yet) you would boot to a command line and install the
proper one - then simply start X.

Nic try buy you're not trying hard enough.
Try installing ubuntu on a box with a Matrox P750 card.
Let me know how it goes.

I'd be surprised if the Matrox framebuffer didnt work, but if it
didn't Matrox supplies a Linux driver. Here's how to install it in that
ubuntu thing:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=526298
That's not what I'm referring to. Of course Matrox has had a linux
driver for the card for some time now. So why didn't ubuntu recognize
the card and supply the driver, like Windows does?
That is what I'm talking about.

Well, it should have done what Windows does, come up in VGA or frame-
buffer mode and let you deal with it. You can always exit X with
Ctl-Alt-Backspace, get to a command line, and fix stuff. Or boot to single
user via linux -s at the grub prompt (just edit the kernel line and add -s).
Or boot the install cd in rescue mode...

I don't care what card you have, frankie, it is simply not necessary to do
a complete OS reinstall if it was not picked up the first time and that is
what YOU said.
