What did I do?

My computer has been running slowly so I did some heavy duty cleaning.
Things are better, so I opened my Word icon and had a Windows Installer open.
Then I got a message that an error occurred and did I want to repair it. So
I answered yes and then got a message that this feature was not available.
Then I got another message saying that Microsoft Office Word has not been
installed for the current user. Please run setup to install application. So
now I'm worried. Please tell me there's an easy solution to this. I've been
using Word for a long time and I'm a teacher, so I really need it!!

Rather sounds like you cleaned a little too well, and that you will need to
reinstall from CD or the network.

I was afraid of that...I don't even remember how I got this. It was
originally loaded on my computer and then the free trial expired. I later
paid for it and I think I downloaded it from a website. If you could take me
from there, I would appreciate it. Do I need anything special? I'm not sure
I have registration materials, but I'll start looking. I do have a Microsoft
Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 CD. Could I do something from that?

Okay...now I really need advice. I've been playing around with trying to
correct this situation and everything seems drastic. I've tried to repair
and change, both through the CD and the internet and I get error messages
that won't allow installation to validate. Do I need to uninstall Office and
then reinstall? I CAN'T lose my documents I already have...is that an issue?
Is it safe to uninstall and then reinstall? Will that solve my problems?
If I'm needing documentation of my legitimate ownership of Word, I'm screwed
right now because I can't find any of my documentation. Please help me as
soon as possible. As noted, I'm a teacher and using Word here at home is
essential.

Thanks!

First, about the download, I don't *think* Microsoft makes Office available
as a download. I don't think. Is your CD real? I can't imagine what this
"through the internet" could be and how it relates to Word.

Most situations where you are fixing things don't need a serial number -- if
it does, then there's no way around it -- well, I'm sure there *are* but I
own the CD so I never bothered looking around.

For backup of document, you won't lose anything other than what is in the
actual Word application folder, and most people don't keep their docs in the
very same folder as their application. But in any case, if it makes you feel
better, just copy them elsewhere and be done with it.

It might just be that you find yourself at the computer store Tuesday, unless
the school's admins can help out.

Well, after some digging, I found out that I do have my documentation and I
simply got a product key code to activate the program that had been installed
in my computer when I got it. Office 2003 was already loaded, but Word had
to be purchased. So, should I uninstall all of Office and then reinstall
using my real CD that I got when I purchased Word? Do you think that's safe?

Todd

Office 2003 includes Word 2003, so I'm not sure why you had to purchase it.

Office was installed on my machine when I got it, but it only had a 30 day
trial for Word.

Todd

In that case, the entire Office 2003 was a trial version. There is no
version of Office that has a 30-day trial for Word only.
