Prior to installing SP2, I followed a checklist:
1) installed all updates from the manufacturer
2) installed all updates from microsoft
3) checked that the bios was current
4) ran both spyware and virus programs (three of each)
5) defragmented hard drive
6) created a restore point.
(There were several other steps, but I threw the checklist away and
don't remember them.)
The only thing I didn't do, and which I didn't consider too important
since it was only recommended on one site, was to disconnect the
printer (that would have required moving furniture to get to the
cables).
SP2 trashed my system.
I had to uninstall and reinstall it several times in order to track
down some of the problems (under SP2, my dial-up didn't work at all,
so I had to uninstall it each time in order to search the Internet for
info), but in the end, I just don't have the expertise and/or
information necessary to make SP2 work on this computer. (HP only
occasionally responds to my e-mails, and microsoft never does, so I'm
all alone with this problem.)
But some of the problems under SP2 remain although I did an uninstall
and ran the restore point (and several earlier restore points).
Before I do a complete system restore from the original disks, I'd
like to know what I did wrong and how to keep from doing it again,
should I succumb to the folly of trying to install SP2 again.
