What configuration/software/hardware is needed for DirectWay

Hello all,
i have 2 xp computers, and sometimes a W98 laptop and a W98 desktop
connected to a wired network at home using a 4 port active hub. we
just use the Ethernet chips in the pc's to connect. One xp computer
is the one which connects to the dial up Internet and the rest
connect via this one. where i live, we will never have DSL. but our
connections are getting slow--actually too much software and too large
files slows us down...

I called my local satellite installer and he said the way we have our
computers connected is a 10 year old way. we need to buy a $30
"switch" from Staples. he specifically said it was a switch and NOT a
hub. what is this??? sounds like bs to me.

what is really needed to connect the DirectWAY receiver with the Home
system plan to these 3 computers so all 3 can access the internet at
the same time? Will my current setup work and is it the most
efficient way to do it? the guy wants $65/hour to connect the 2nd
computer to the receiver and he said it takes about an hour to
configure the software....

any info is appreciated,
ron

I too am bandwidth deprived as I am too far from DSL switching stations and
cable won't be on my road in the next decade. I jumped to Satelite last
year. It is better than dial up but there are times it is very slow.

I am far from an expert; however, I think it is safe to say either you've
got something differnt than me or somebody's looking to take your money. I
have 3 computers connected to the internet via satelite. I have a Belkin 54g
router connected though a Direcway DW6000. Two of the computers are running
XP Pro and are wired via ethernet cards to the router. The other is in
another room connected wirelessly through the router. The internet works on
all three however the connect will slow down whenever more than one is
sharing bandwidth.

Once the router was installed, the rest of the process went pretty
flawlessly. The DW6000 uses satelite for downloads and uploads. No dial-up
connection for me.

thanks for the reply Tomo,
i probably should have done some homework before i asked the ??

the guy who i talked to was not a good salesman--he kept interrupting
me and just talked when i was asking him a ? but then maybe i was not
a good listener---

anyway, my hub which connected to the different computer is only a
10mbps hub. ALL the switches i saw, like from Netgear, are 100mbps.
so clearly there is a difference between the "action" of a hub and
that of a switch, with the switch being the better.

the guy understood what i already had, so i think he wanted to keep my
cost down. your configuration is what i have seen diagramed on like
the Netgear site--all computers connected to a switch/firewall/print
server and to the broadband modem (dsl/cable, or in our case
DirectWay).

Am i correct in "assuming" the DirectWay DW6000 is the same as the
dsl/cable modem in diagrams?

Did the DirectWay installer checkout the router and connections too?
Extra charge?

so from the DW6000, you have an Ethernet cable to the router. i
assume the router is also a firewall--yes? then from the router you
connect the computers via ethernet cables and 1 via WiFi. Did you do
all the Windows setup for the router, and what was involved? As
mentioned, i have a hub with 2 computers and 1 laptop (sometimes)
connected via Ethernet cables. i set up the tcp/ip, + using the XP
Network Setup Wizard with no problems. will setting up the
router/firewall/print server be as easy?

thanks for any tips,
ron
