What causes MS Access to automatically create backup mdb

What is causing MS Access to automatically create a backup mdb file? The
file created has the same name with BACKUP.mdb added.
 
You find that when Access has some problems and it needs to close the
database, Access will automatically create a BACKUP file as you described
(unless you already have a BACKUP previously and in this case, Access will
ask for a name for the new backup). After that, Access will Compact &
Repair the database and then re-open it.

It is basically an insurance policy. If your database works fine, delete
the BACKUP after a few days.
