Good that Jay sorting things out there, Mike.
Am posting to say that your machine sounds like it behaves a bit like
mine. I can't access some services which others can.
At least that is until I yank out some of the security I have
(disable firewall, rename hosts, perhaps suspend antivirus, even
start some unwanted Microsoft services I had disabled, etc). Not
good really.
As an introspective ...
I think I probably have my security clamping down too hard. So
paradoxically I end up having no security at all when I need to get
around those puzzling freezes & failures!
In the past I've found that the culprit is often the "unimportant"
messaging traffic like ICMP. Or it's the fallback stuff which isn't
needed often like DHCP comms with the network to confirm a broadband
user's IP address.
Some other of my IP settings were a bit squiffy and some TCP auto-
tuning work may have been less clever than it seemed at the time.
I've ripped out a lot of the "shield" software like TeaTimer which
watch for trojans or reg activity or whatever but can be over
enthusiastic.
And I also end up using IE much more than I like because some sites
depend on it's non-standard features like ActiveX.
But in the end it all seems to work. Which amazes me sometimes!
Good luck in sorting out your blocks.
