What belongs in task manager?

I seem to have a whole bunch of programs running in the backround on my
Windows XP machine. When I open up task manager, there is at least 20
procceses, including 6 svchost. My computer is running lik a horsdrawn wagon
and freezes up whenever I try to run Viris Scan or spybot scan. I'm about to
kick it ut the window. So what belongs running in the background? How do I
controll what runs in the background? Please help

Unless you have an under powered computer, you are heavily infected with
adware, spyware, trojans and virus's. The number of processes running has
little to do with your situation. It is "what" is running. At the moment I
have 63 processes running without any slowdown.

Boot up your computer into **safe** mode and run your antivirus scans and
spyware scans from there. You stand a much better chance of have the nasties
eliminated.

Download, install, update and run all of the following.

Ad-Aware
http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/aawsepersonal.exe

Spybot search and destroy
http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/spybotsd14.exe

Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta1)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en

If none of the above fixes the issue then download Hijack this, run it, save
a copy of the log file and cut and paste it back here to the group so that
it can be analyzed.

Do NOT post Hijack This logs here. If you want Mr PCButts1 to look at them mail them to him.

6 svchosts is normal, 20 processes is not many compared to most people.

msinfo32 /categories +SWEnvRunningTasks /report "%userprofile%\desktop\msinfort.txt"

Will list your processes on home or pro (look on the desktop)

To see what each svchost (and other service processes) does in Pro ONLY type

cmd /k tasklist /svc > "%userprofile%\desktop\svchost.txt"

Please ignore pcButthead, as all this troll is trying to do is spam this
group. This is not the place to post HiJackThis logs.

Here is some real expert advise from PA Bear MS-MVP:

Check for Hijackware
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm
http://defendingyourmachine.blogspot.com/

When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to
use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware.
**Post your HijackThis log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html or
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

Start here:

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, CWShredder and HijackThis:

Note: Update the first two programs, once installed, before running.

Once done, go to Start/Run/Msconfig/Services and check off Hide All MS
Services. From there evaluate the list.

Mr. Butts,

This group is not the proper place for HJT log files to be posted and from
what I have gathered, you don't seem to be the proper person for
reading/interpreting them for the public via the postings to this MS XP
Newsgroup.

Carry on somewhere else and have a GREAT Day.

With all due respect Kelly, what you have gathered is wrong. Why don't you
spend your time in answering the op's question instead of bothering me. From
what you said you "gathered" about me you should know that you are wasting
your time.
