Where do you check to keep up to date with the newest technologies,
products, and testing/review info when you are looking to design and build a
new box? I like Tom's Hardware Guide which is good for detailed reviews of
individual products, but it is too time consuming to try and sift through
everything there to see the larger picture. I'd like to find a more
comprehensive source(s). Got any good links?

PC magazines are a nice read, to glean what`s going on. They do reports and
reviews which help give you ideas. Personally I wait a while with new
technology. Let others test it out and find faults, and more importantly the
prices come down after the initial rush. best wishes..J

Any medium that allows advertising is likely to be biased towards that
particular advertiser.

They claim not to be, but I don't believe a word of it.

Go to forums / user reviews etc and read up there.

I get ZDNet's newsletters and they seem to be as current as any online
publications. You can go to their site and sign up for whatever ones that
are of interest to you.

I avoid the "pro" sites. Most of them are not nearly as
good as they think they are. What I have found to be
most productive is to look at the problems that the
end users are having and trying to describe. I think they
are more honest, and if they post about solutions to
their problems, I learn from that. Personally, I find the
jargon users to be misleading, and totally inept when
it comes down to really fixing the problem. The best
sites for *real* information are the Gamer sites. They
don't hesitate to raise issues about their top of the line
systems. Most of *us* have the best boxes on the
market, and we work at the leading edge of multi-media
apps, and see the real problems .... and the real
solutions ... and post back as to what those solutions
are. Also, the Gamers come from a broad background
of experience, and sooner or later, you find someone
who speaks your language. Mine is hard-core
electronics, engineering applications ( CAD ), and
*GAMES* ... with Far Cry running at the highest
settings. I have all the good ones except HL2 .. waiting
for the Chinese guys to put it on ebay :-)
