What are Windows 2000 registry commands?

E

Eric

Is there a command to "clean up" the registry?
Is there a restore command that would do what "scanreg /restore" does on
Windows 98?
Thanks

Dave Patrick

No to both.

Windows 2000 doesn't have any restoring or cleaning up features? What could
I do to fix it? It seems to be running slow for startup and shutdown. When
I select Shutdown from the Start menu, with nothing running, it takes a
minute to shut down. I get a window that says Running logoff scripts...
Saving settings... Windows is now shutting down... Another user here with
about the same PC says that Window goes by so fast he can't read it.

Is this just another one of those massive oversights by Microsoft? The
utility msconfig doesn't come with Windows 2000, though it does come with
Windows XP and that version works on 2000.

Not a registry issue. Use the Group policy editor to see what is running
%windir%\system32\gpedit.msc
User Config\Windows Settings\Scripts\Logoff

If you run Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Backup, then choose ERD, then
if you check the box for "Also backup....", then the reg will also be backed
up to
%windir%\repair\RegBack
leaving the
%windir%\repair\
directory files intact as original installation.

Natively you can; Start\Settings\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer
Management(Local)\System Information\Software Environment\Startup
Programs|View|Advanced, then in the "Location" column, you'll find the path
to the "Startup" location either in the "Startup" directories or from the
registry's "Run" keys.

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

You can delete the shortcuts that you no longer want to run.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can delete the string value for the program you no longer want to run.

or copy msconfig from Windows XP

Nope, please read replies authored by Bruce Chambers to questions about
msconfig for insights as to why it wasn't in Windows 2000.

Eric I hate to tell you but there is a reason msconfig did not come with Windows 2000. It is because that utility is really for use by the general public which Windows 2000 was not made for. That is why it is called Windows 2000
Professional and the rest are servers.

That application if used in Windows 2000 will cause a Service Manager "Error" at every boot. There are much better ways to "fix" what may be influencing those that want to use it in Windows 2000. Takes a little knowledge of how Windows 2000 works not much but definitely more (usually) then the general public cares to learn. Not the "professional."
