What are the OLKRPCLOG<date/time>.etl files that are appearing since I've installed SP2 for Office 2

Hello !

I've got Windows XP SP2 with Office 2003, and since I've installed the
SP2 for Office 2003, I've got, each time I use Outlook, some mysterious
files (I think they are some sort of log files) that multiply in my temp
directory.

Their name is something like : OLKRPCLOG_03_08_2006_09_03_15_1.etl

And their size varies from 16 Ko to several Mo.

Their content cannot be opened with notepad or word.

And they don't delete by themselves so, after a while, they slow my pc.

Do you know what are those file and if their is an option, somewhere, to
disable them ?

Thanks

Those files may well be error log files for Outlook. What sort of crashes do you remember Outlook having?

This is a long shot, but worthwhile to try once (even used it when Outlook seemed to stall at startup).
Having no other instance of Outlook open already, go to Start >Run , in the Run box, type in
outlook.exe /safe <enter-key>

That brings up Outllok in safe mode. Once in there you can look around to see if folders, calendar, etc look normal.
I've used it in cases where Outlook jammed due to prior disconnected sessions of email downloads.
Just use it once. Then exit out.

These logs are typically in temp folders. You may delete them. As of now, I can't find the option to turn the error log off.

Thanks a lot Maurice for your reply.

This is what is strange... Outlook 2003 works fine, or at least it seems to
work totaly fine... I've used it for ours at work without noticing any
problem so I've no idea why those log should be crash or error log.

Would you know how to read those files... it may help to understand what is
wrong ?

I've found the solution to my problem : It was an Outlook advanced option
(I don't know how it is called in English) that produce logs for
maintenance purpose it seems. This option is not activated by default but
was activated on the master used in our company.

So, if someone else is annoyed by those files, go to tools -> options ->
other -> advanced options et de-activate the "log for maintenance" (or
something like that).

Best regards

Dear

ETL is : Event Trace Log

I think you have enable Outlook 2003 LOGGING it creates all event trace
files in Temp file

If you disable this log does not appear for that you may have to UNCheck
ENABLE LOGGING in out look Tools>Options>other>Advance optin>Under
General settings

some time Event Trace Log size increase to 2 MB and thousand files are stored

Good Luck
Regards
