Hi, hopefully someone here knows the answer to the
Question: What are the Maximum Processes for XP?

In other words:
How many process ( Handle and treads graphics ) can
be run on a Win XP Pro box with a P4 (1.6 GHz) CPU?

Thanks,
Jimmy.

Cannot be answered - at least with the phrasing given.

It's great that we know you have Windows XP (no idea the version or patch
level) and we know your processor is a P4 1.6Ghz.. But we don't know the
amount of RAM or your configuration for virtual memory nor the size of each
of these processes or how much CPU time they require. And that's just for
starters on what we don't know that might help to answer your question.

Thanks for your reply. My question is a general one:

Is there a CAP on the number of processes that can run
on Windows XP Professional, or is it unlimited and only
limited by the amount of RAM, VM, and other resources?

Is there a CAP, for example Maximum Processes=200?

As you mentioned patch level, is there a patch which
can be installed (or uninstalled) which could change this?

Is there be a difference between SP1 vs. SP2 versions
in so far as maximum running processes are concerned?

I hope I posted my question the smart way this time. d:^)

Isn't a more pertinent question how much demand in terms of CPU and
memory do those processes place upon what is available? Some processes
place little demand and some a lot!

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for the reply. The question is being asked on behalf of
someone who had not exceeded their RAM / PageFile limits,
yet found himself unable to launch another process. They sent
me this question to post on their behalf to find out if there was
an imposed limit to the amount of processes you can run on an XP
system (regardless of CPU and memory requirements of each).

Is there such a limit? And if so...
If there is a difference between versions and patch levels?

I'm hoping that Shenan may also be researching an answer.

Best regards,
Jimmy.

I don't know. I have never seen the number of running processes being
quoted as a problem. How many are they seeing?

However, ask your friend for details of Error Messages / Reports. Refer
them to Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hi Gerry,

Thank you very much again for helping me tackle this question.

As a follow up, I had a chance to chat with Jim Allchin today
and asked him if there was an imposed limit on the number of
processes which can be running at one time regardless of the
resource usage, and he replied that there is an imposed limit
on 32bit platforms which are not present on the x64 versions.

With that knowledge in hand, I'll refer my friend to his event
logs as you suggested for further clues as to what types of
event imposes the limit such as non paged pools or virtual
address space. Your assistance was greatly appreciated. :-)

Cheers,
Jimmy.
