What are the Best/Popular .NET Libraries everyone is using?

Kind of new to VS programming, came across some decent libraries and was
wondering what sorts of libraries are big in the industry, ones you
can't live without and use all the time.

Also, what are the downsides of using libraries? My brother has been a
MS dev for years, he says he prefers to write his own stuff. He might be
a little jaded since he also enjoys writing assembly code...
