What are the advantages of XP over 2000?

Glenn Richardson

Hi all,

I am looking at upgrading my client machines from Win2000 to WinXP Pro,
but for me to be able to do this I need to convince my bosses.

Can anybody please give me some advantages of XP Pro over 2000 so that
I can convince the 'bean counters' to part with their money?!

I am currently running Server 2003 with 43 clients on Win2000.

Many thanks in advance
Glenn

IMHO, there are NO advantages over W2K in a corporate environment.

Absolutely correct!

..........Of course there is:

1.A more granular control through group policy. But who really uses Group
policy.
2A different interface. Those new menus don't save any time.
3.Built in remote desktop and assistance features, because companies like
spending more money on these kinds of programs.
4. A native ability to schedule the defrag program. Again, companies like
spending money on a program to do all their pcs, or to spend time scripting
and implementing a home grown solution,
5 A more functional compatibility mode. Did I say more functional? I don't
actually remember this range of features in 2000 other than the standard NT
wow components. But who cares right? Companies don't need to support older
applications.
6. Improved hardware support. Companies never buy new hardware.
7. Who needs a built in firewall. Defensive depth is for morons.
8. Built in CD writing. Companies love spending even more money for users
who need to burn to optical media.

I could probably keep going, but you are right . Microsoft went through the
time and energy to develop a whole OS that has absolutely no benefit to the
corporate user.

I will surely make certain to contact you for advice when I need to update
my windows 3.11 systems. I would have already updated them but I am
comfortable with win 3.11 and I don't see any benefit to upgrading and
having to learn something new.

Vista !? DOH!!!! (I know it was an XP question.)

Actually, if you buy into the whole office server 2007 package coming out,
Vista is looking pretty good.

I don't think its ready for prime time yet, but if the performance kicks up
like XP did once its out of beta debug mode Vista will also probably provide
better performance than XP.

I have been beta testing Vista for a few months now and the last version to
be released is starting to look pretty cool.

You ARE speaking of the Office package right ? Running the Office on XP vs.
Vista.

What?
Four people with decades of experience give you all the valid reasons and
then one inflexible git (I chose a UK flame word so it would something he
was familiar with) gives you the cheap solution and you say he is the
"general consensus"?

Ok then.

Of course in all fairness, I work in a position where licensing is all site
based, so I don't see a bottom line hit for doing conversions other than man
hours.

Yes I am speaking of the integration between Office server 2007 (aka new
SharePoint Portal Server) Office 2007 and windows vista.

None of these are released yet.

And as for performance, I think we will see better performance out of Vista
than out of XP if MS keeps to the framework that was set out. Since it is
currently a release candidate it is running in debug mode, which slows
evreything down.

And for a corporate environment particularly, Vista has even better UI
management and granular usage policies.

Now if I could just get its wireless support to work.......

I had some clients who had very stable Windows for Workgroups 3.11 networks.
Should they still be using that? I understand the no change if it's working
mindset. Change just for the sake of change is never a good idea. The main
reason for switching from win2k is support. XP will be supported longer than
win2k. This is not just from Microsoft but also hardware manufacturers. Even
now many printers don't work quite right with win2k. It won't be long before
chipset drivers, video drivers, etc follow suit.

First of all, realize that the two are very similar. Under the hood, Windows
2000 is Windows NT 5.0, and XP is NT 5.1. So XP is a relatively minor update
to 2000.

If you already have 2000, and are contemplating moving to XP, the right
answer for many people is that it's not worth the cost and effort. But if
you're planning on buying a new computer and asking what version to install
on it, to me the answer is clearly XP. XP has the following small but
significant advantages over 2000:

Msconfig
System Restore
Driver Rollback
Better Help System
Better Virtual Memory Handling
Clear Type
IE Add-on Manager
Driver Rollback
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
Internet Explorer Add-on Manager
Windows Firewall
Encrypting File System (EFS) with Multi-user Support
Smart Card Support
Windows Security Center
Attachment Manager
Data Execution Prevention
Increased Application Compatibility
User State Migration Tool
Support for Latest Hardware Standards
Setup with Dynamic Update
Unattended Installation
System Preparation Tool (SysPrep)
Remote OS Installation
Remote Assistance
Remote Desktop
Group Policy
Resultant Set of Policy (RSoP)
Automatic Updates
Windows Update Improvements
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
Adaptive User Environment
Improved Handling of File Associations
Context Sensitive Task Menus
Integrated CD Burning
Easily Publish Information to the Web
DualView
Troubleshooters
Credential Manager
Offline Files and Folders
ClearType
Enhanced Online Conferencing
Wireless Networking
Network Location Awareness
Network Setup Wizard
Network Bridge
Unified Wireless LAN Client
Bluetooth 2.0 Update

Not all these features are equally valuable to everyone, of course.

OK, so the advantages of XP over 2000 are 'probably' not worth the
cost/hassle.

So for those that have seen/been using the beta version of Vista, how
much of a difference is there going to be?
