What are rar files?

HI, i was in a binary group and someone posted a screensaver that was a rar
file, what is it and how do i download it to mak it work? i am using windows
mail. thx

Like other archives, RAR files are data containers, they store one or
several files in the compressed form. After you downloaded RAR file from
Internet, you need to unpack its contents in order to use it. One of many
applications capable of unpacking on of these files is WinRAR:

They are compressed files, like ZIP files. They require the RAR
archiver. You download them the same way you download anything else.
