WHAT ARE PRIMARY&2ndary MASTER/SLAVE???

R

RAHUL GHOSH

My problems are:--
(1)I'm having 2 HardDisks & 2 CDdrives in my system..
My HDD's RPM may not be same, i'm not very sure..But how
does it affect system boot time if RPM of both drives are
dissimilar?? Because if the RAMs doesn't match(in case u r
having 2 RAMs in the system), then the system will not
boot..Similarly if the HDdrives' RPM are not similar then
how will it affect the system--will it ever boot or boot
slow???
(2)Finally please tell me the correct rule to connect
2HDDs & 2CD drives with the IDE ports of the motherboard
in terms of primary & secondary master/slave ...I mean to
say how should one connect the 2 harddisks & 2 CD drives
with the IDE ports of motherboard in terms of primary &
secondary master/slave??? whether the HDDs should be
connected as primary master & 2ndary master or as primary
master & primary slave???
(3)Also please tell me win-XP works better on which--FAT32
or NTFS ???
please help
regards, Rahul..

You're hard drives to not have to be compatible with regards to RPM. I would
install the OS to the faster of the 2 and of course making it the primary
master. Format using NTFS.

ok, on all the drives there are "jumpers" on one set of the jumpers it should me mark with 3 settings, S or Slave, M or Master or A for auto detect or auto select. set all the drives to A, i think it's A could be something different but it is not the S or M. Drive spin speed or read write speed will make no difference. It's not like the memory deal. It's best to have both HDD on primary and the others on secondary. It will boot fast that way. Use FAT-32 as opposed to NTFS. Hope this helps, more if you need it. (e-mail address removed)

Do not use auto select! Do not use FAT32, NTFS is more robust and with
smaller clusters makes less fragmentation.
I will assume you have a cd burner and although you can set up the 4 ide's
however you like, this is what i can suggest for you:
Primary master: hard drive(faster of the 2)
Primary slave: cd rom
Secondary Master: CD BURNER
Secondary slave: hard drive 2
Just my opinion and not necessarily best for you depending on how and what
you use it for. But for sure, do yourself a favor and use NTFS...no
disrespect Dinger ;)

Please keep to the original threads you've already started. Much easier
to keep track of for all of us that way.

Thanks

Your Motherboard has two ide cable connectors.
To connect CDROMS and Hard Drives.
The latest technology has changed to SATA cabling.

Ide Connector one is Primary Master and Slave.
Connector Two is Secondary Master and Slave.

General rule:
Place main Drive on Ide One Primary Master.
Place CDROM on secondary cable.

Master should go on end of Ide Cables.
Do not mix CDROM and Hard Drives.
It will slow down your hard drive.

The CDROM and Hard drives have jumpers to set as slave or master.
Factory setting defaults are normally master.

In your case I would use the two hard drives on the Primary cable but:
Preferably use a Promise Controller card to connect the second drive.
I do not like master slaving drives but that is just my way.
