What are '.COMPUTER' folders?

Hi

My machince generated two '.COMPUTER' folders (in BLOCK letters but wihtout
the apostrophes e.g. Suzanne.COMPUTER) after restoring a back-up. These are
now located in the 'Documents and Settings' folder on the main hard drive
along with the orignal, individually named, 'my documents' folders. I can
delete them but they are regenerated on re-booting the machine. There are
five 'my documents' folders but only two also have '.COMPUTER' folders

What are they and how do I get rid of them? They seem to be copies of two,
individually named 'my documents' folders but now files are saved to the
'.COMPUTER' folders by default and the original 'my documents' (e.g Suzannes
Documents) folders are ignored!

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Many thanks
Martin

If you right-click My Computer, and then click the Computer Name tab, you
will find your computer name is probably 'COMPUTER'.
I noticed a similar thing on my computer when I reinstalled XP, and told it
not to reformat the hard drive. I put in the same user names again, and ended
up with (e.g. Admin and Admin.XP, when my computer was called XP).
To fix this, you could try changing what 'your documents' folder is. I can't
remember how to do this. Change it so it points to the folder without the
..COMPUTER
Then delete the .COMPUTER folder, restart the computer and see if it
continues generating the folder again?

Marvellous. Thank you very much - this has helped enormously; I now
understand what the problem is and I think I can repair it (if I can't I'll
re-post!).
