What after XP?

X

XP-dinosaur

I'm a home user on XP Pro. I need to work out what OS to specify on
a prebuilt machine (one for me and one for a friend). It's either
Windows 7 or Vista.

Although I'm fairly technical I haven't kept up to date with details
of the newer Windows. I haven't even seen either Win 7 or Vista
running!

I did hear Vista get announced and heard how it had problems with
things like incompatible drivers. Then I heard Windows 7 was
announced but ISTR it's not really fully complete or something like
that.

What might be the best choice to go for?

Windows 7! Vista will be soon confined to the digital dustbin along with
Windows ME.

Vista is obsolete, Win7 launches in 4 days - and it makes up a lot of the
deficiencies in Vista.

Well Windows Vista is demonstrably horrid .. Windows7 has yet to be
convicted, but might turn out to be even worse. Who can tell. XP is
still much the best option, except it isn't an option unless you are a
corporate customer, or install the OS yourself....

If you're going to climb a learning curve I guess you might as well do
it with Win7 though. I mean it =could= be worse than Vista, but it is
hard to imagine. The sad thing is Vista has even managed to back-pollute
some of the working bits of XP (I'm thinking of stuff like downloaded
files from the web, which XP now marks as dodgy/blocked, and my Vista
machine refuses to even pull across my local network from the XP
machines).

Yeah yeah, I'm sure it's just a group policy .. part of the 'Microsoft
OwnZ your computer' and 'All users are dumb schmucks who can't be
trusted' policies.

Windows 7 is what Vista should have been if Microsoft had bothered with a
bit of Quality Control.

Vista should never have been released. Is there anyone anywhere that can
honestly say that the world would not have been a better place if MS had
skipped vista and went straight for Windows 7?

I've had no issues with it since SP1. Then again, I'm not a clueless
****wit and know how to find drivers, compatible hardware and software.

Microsoft is hoping to quash an uproar amongst their customers having to
pay for a service pack to Vista by slapping on a different name (via
version number). They need an excuse to generate revenue from a service
pack (because they haven't been charging for them in the past). So, if
deciding which to pay for, yes, buy the latest service pack for Vista,
er, Windows 7.

I don't dislike Vista and windows 7 is very similar in look and feel. It's
also faster than Vista and takes up less space on the disk.
I can't see any advantages to buying a machine with Vista now.

You miss the point. Most of the people who use this newsgroup are not
clueless ****wits, but many of us support them. They are a few simple touchs
i like in vista, one such is the 'repair your computer' option. While those
of us who arent clueless, have been able to access products for XP that do
pretty much what the built in one for vista does, but the inclusion
automatically makes getting windows up and running significantly easier for
the average person. The unmountable boot volume is extremely common with XP,
and solvable 95% of the time by a quick chkdsk, excellent innovation by MS
to include that as one of the automatic checks in the 'repair your computer'
option.

The same could be said for leopard to snow leopard....

Windows 7 is being introduced on 22 October. Would your friend
really thank you for putting an old operating system on his NEW
computer?
If you are worried he will be on the phone every five minutes asking
how to do things, then tell him there is a HELP function if you can
not answer his questions.

I would only agree with the part about you being able to find drivers.
Well, after asking people in other groups which site to go to!
The number of times you get mixed up in car, cb and amateur radio
groups and are shown to be talking rubbish is amazing. Your latest
discussion about PLT using frequency modulation was well funny.

The only thing that put me off about Vista was how bloated it was and
how unpredictable it was at times. It also had IPv6 on permanently, but
not one router or software firewall I used could ever deal with IPv6 so
users were left wide open to those knowing how to bypass the firewall.
The same will happen with Win7, IPv6 is on permanently. At least
with XP you have to tell the computer to use it and are safe with the
default setting of it being switched off.
Windows 7 is just a fix for Vista. All the problems reported to Microsoft
by Vista users have been corrected and instead of yet another service
pack it has been renamed Windows 7.
It works quite well, but I prefer XP which has never been unstable.

DOS+WFWG - OK
95 - Rubbish
98 - OK
ME - Biggest pile of kak known to mankind
XP - OK
Vista - More kak
7 - Looks to be OK

Anyone see the pattern here?
And I know I left out NT and 2K, but they were intended more for commercial
use.

You mean like XP was a service pack for Win2k...

Isnt it the same pattern for Star Trek movies??

be turned off by unticking a checkbox.
