What about Lynx?

G

Guest

I recently read on the Google Guidelines for Webmasters
http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html
that you should use Lynx to check out your web site. I tried downloading
and installing it but have had numerous problems trying to install it. I'm
using Windows XP home.

Does anyone have any suggestion on:
What version of Lynx should I be using?
Where should I get it?
Is it installed under DOS or Windows?
Is it really that inportant to check out your website with Lynx?
Other suggestions?

Thanks.

do a google search for "poodle predictor" it'll show you what lynx will show
you.
the best of my recollection is lynx is a very old browser that's rarely used
by anyone anymore.

ContentSeed: great tool for web masters,
a fantastic convenience for site owners.

Lynx is a text-only browser.

What it has to do with FrontPage is helping to understand what your FP
pages will look like to a search engine spider like Googlebot. Building
pages in FP is only the first step, usually -- you also want to optimize
those pages to get them indexed by search engines.

Thanks Chris.
I'd much rather be able to go to a web page and just type in an address,
than to have to download, install, do the setup and debug, and try to figure
out how Lynx works.

I did go to the poodle page of
gritechnologies.com/tools/spider.go?q=evolt.org
Have you visited their site? I'm just getting a blank page from this
address. I assume they are just down at the moment.

Thanks Stefan.
This is the route I already tried, so I was on the right track, but haven't
been able to get it up and running. Rather than spend a lot of time trying
to debug my situation, I really like Chris' idea, using the Poodle
Predictor. I'm going to try this and maybe it will save me some grief.
(Oh, so many things to learn when you put up a web site for the first time.)

Thanks again.

Hi again Chris.
I've still had no luck in trying to get to the Poodle Predictor tool.
Grit's link is still not working. I sent them an email, asking if they are
keeping their site up todate.
I found another site that has a SE text similulator.
http://www.stargeek.com/crawler_sim.php

I tried it out and it works OK.
Did you ever try out the Poodle tool when it was working? (Assuming it was
at some point.) Just curious if the Stargeek tool gives results like the
Poodle tool did or are we talking "apples and oranges"?

Thanks for your help.

Why not just compare it at

Thanks for the info Stefan.
I got it to work and the results look like my web site, except without the
graphics; just the text.
Since Google recommended you use Lynx to check out your site, I was
expecting to see some great revelations that I wouldn't have noticed without
using Lynx.
So what's the big deal about using Lynx? A person (webmaster) can pertty
easily visulize what their site would look like without the graphics.
Do you have any idea why Goolgle thinks this is such an important thing to
do???

No
- IMHO a waste of time

Because spiders like Googlebot can only read text, not images. Some
webpages I've seen have complex logos or large graphics or animations
and wonder why their site isn't ranking well for keywords or search
terms contained in those images. The reason is bots don't even see them.

Look at your site in Lynx and that will be immediately obvious.
