That some people are so ignorant when buying a computer that they don't
think past their noses.
They look for a computer and find one they like. The salescrook expouts
it's a great machine,
256meg of ram, cd burner and easy to use. Well shoppers, take a moment to
think about what
you're going to do when the time comes (and it will) to reinstall the
system. Yes, that flashy machine
didn't come with installation disks did it. How many of you reading this
have got all the necessary disks?

I'm reinstalling my friend's machine and guess what, yep no disks.
No windows, no modem drivers, no graphic drivers, no sound drivers, no
antivirus software. Wake up
people, would you buy a car with no petrol cap? But it was full when I
bought it! They say there's one
born every day. More than one, me thinks!!!

Anyway, I need help and advice.

After installing Windows Pro it appears the multimedia audio controller is
not installed.
How would I overcome this problem?
Also, the PCI modem isn't installed either. Yep, no disks and Windows
wizard couldn't
find a driver for it.

I thought windows installed it's own drivers for these but apparently not,
or do you think it's a bad installation?
Can someone help me out so I can give this machine back and forever keep my
big mouth shut in future.
Could it be that the new install of Windows Pro is faulty and needs to be
reinstalled again?

Since the retail store where you were so foolish as to buy a pre-built
didn't install the software then why is it their fault you haven't any
education regarding the purchase? I suppose you walk down the aisle of
washing machines, too, just looking at the outside and the list of
features without doing any research before plopping down a load of
money. How is it their fault that your friend or you wiped the
partition containing the recovery program with its files?

How could any operating system contain all drivers for all hardware,
especially hardware that doesn't even exist at the time the operating
system is released? The OS might not have the driver. You probably
want the latest one from the hardware maker, anyway.

Obviously you've never installed Windows and it is beyond your
expertise. Find another friend of your "friend" to do the job
correctly. Stick to simply being an end-user of pre-builts.

Yeah, blame everyone else for your, um, your "friend's" mistakes.

it could be a simple
bait n switch,

whereas the customer was presented
with a wonderful product,
then given a piece of crap
to take home - possibly a
return from another customer
who left out the disks.

if the poster was truly
a friend, the piece of junk
would be taken back to
the store and hell would
be raised with the management,
credit card notified to reject
the purchase and a complaint
to the bbb filed....

also, if it was sold as a new
product, then the manufacturer
might want to know of the store
that is cheating customers with
their product line...

No idea where she got the machine, had it before I met her. I don't think
she got it from a store.
Like many people, she bought it of a guy who build computers I guess (bad
move). I'm not blaming anyone, just highlighting
the fact that many are ignorant when they make this type of purchase.
Ignorant as in naive not stupid.
Having said that it amazes me that some only know how to turn the damn thing
on and can't be bothered
with anything else only to rely on others to get them out of a jam.
And windows bytherway has many drivers that it can install I, don't expect
it to have drivers for everything.
I was hoping though it may have had a generic one for my problem.

MM:
First of all download the Belarc Advisor program - http://www.belarc.com
(click on the "Free Download" link) to determine the make/model of the
various components for which drivers are needed.

Then, as best you can, access the manufacturers' sites to (hopefully)
download & install the necessary drivers. Don't forget to check with the
manufacturer of the motherboard where you may find some or all of the
drivers.
