Western Digital Data Lifeguard & Drive Spinning Down?

Justin

So I'm having some problems with a RAID controller. I determined it is
basically a crapped out motherboard that is out of warranty.
So I have an Intel board on order.
While I'm waiting for the stuff to come on I figured I would run a
diagnostic on both drives.
Both are WD2500YS with firmware 20.06C06

My question is, when I go to run the diagnostic using the WD utility, when I
hit R to actually run the test; the drives spin down and spins back up.
Is that normal? It happened with both drives so I'm assumning the drives
are both OK.

Probably a spin-up time test.

Well, at least you cannot conclude they are broken from
an operation supported by the drives.
