Western Digital 74 GB Raptor

I am running Windows ME on a Abit AX8 motherboard. I just purchased a WD 74
GB Raptor. The Western Digital Site states: " Weston Digital offers support
for Serial ATA Drives in Windows 2000 and XO only." Will I have problems
running this drive in Windows ME?

Then WD are morons. Windows does not even know if your chipset ports are pata
or sata, they show up as PCI IDE in Device Manager.

If You have drivers for Your SATA controller that work with ME, the disk
should work fine, too. Not supported doesn't mean it does not work, but if
You experience problems with Your dinosaur OS You're on Your own...

Maybe it's time to upgrade to XP. Not only because of the much better
storage support...

Are there Windows ME drivers for the SATA host adapter on the Abit AX8? If
so then you should have no problems, if not then you won't be able to use
any SATA drive.

I take that back. In WinNT4 SP4+ and NT5, the atapi driver will see all
channels of ICH5+ and other PnP PCI IDE.

They may not have this feature in Win 98/ME's IDE port driver. Anyone know?

Well, I couldn't find the exclusive use of Win2K/XP regarding warranty on
this drive. Where's it at?

Warranty aint the same thing as support.

WD just means that if you say have a problem installing the drive
under ME etc, you're on your own as far as they are concerned.

Wont be much longer before MS says the same thing too.
