WEP settings

Can anyone please help? I've spent more time configuring
than using my router.
I've got a broadband connection so I went and bought a
Belkin wireless router.
I can set 128-bit WEP encryption on the router but then I
can't get Windows XP to connect to the network anymore. I
says it should be 4 or 10 ascii characters or something
about hex characters.
If anyone can help, I'd be really grateful.

The wireless is actually built in to my laptop, so I was
clicking on the icon on the two screens in the system
tray and trying to store the passphrase (in ascii) in the
wireless networks propeties.
Is this the wrong thing to do?
