Welcome window question

This is probably a novice question, which is mostly what I am.

I just bought a new computer that came with Windows XP Professional. When
new, I turned on the computer, the desktop appeared in about 15-20 seconds
and I could start to work immediately.

After several weeks, the Welcome Window came up with my name as the account
user name (the only account on the Welcome window). I clicked on the logo
and XP said that it was configuring things according to my preferences.
This took at least twenty seconds more before the desktop was in place.

The most recent software installed was Office 2007 and some LaCie hard drive
back-up software to go with a LaCie USB harddrive I acquired for back-up. I
used System Restore to go back before both were installed, but the Welcome
window remains.

What can I do to rid myself of the time-consuming Welcome window and go back
to a quick, ready-to-go desktop?

Help and clarification of what's happened would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Ed Presson

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To
Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install TweakUI for XP and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

1. Click Start - Run - type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2
2. If the "User must enter a user name and password to use this computer"
option is already unchecked then make a check mark and click Apply button.
3. Select a user from the list, you want to auto logon with and uncheck the
"User must...." option and click Ok.
4. Restart your computer for changes to take effect.

If the "User must enter a user name....." option was already checked then
uncheck the option and you will be asked to enter the user name and password
you want to auto logon with. Fill the User name and password and apply the
changes.

Hope this help, let us know!

It worked! ...and I learned a little more about finding my way in Windows
XP.

Thanks so much for your help.
