Kelly

I hope someone can help me with these problems.

I am Running Windows XP Home, SP1. I recently removed
both the sasser and Qhost virii. I updated my system as
instructed by microsoft; activated a firewall, downloaded
latest security patch, etc. I now have internet access
on the pre-virus level, which is nice. My problems are
as follows. When I try and view my Network Connections
window, it is blank. In Task Manager, the Processes tab
is blank. I have no sound and cannot access my Device
Manager. I'm sure there are other problems, but those
are the most glaring ones.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks
Kelly

Option 1 - The easy way.

You may want to consider doing a file integrity check using your XP cd. In Windows 2000 it is called System File Checker. I am not sure what it is called in XP. I think it is the same. Microsoft has version checking on the files so it may not replace a more current version even if it is corrupted. I also am not sure about this.

Option 2 - Here are some things I would do. The hard way.

Disconnect your system from the network cable until you do the things in this list.
Reinstall your OS - (rebuild your system). If you suspect you have been infected there is no real way to clean up all of the changes the virus(es) may have made. I know you don't want to do this but if you want to be sure the problems are gone this is the only real way to do it.
Install Antivirus before attaching your system to the network and update your antivirus as soon as you connect to the network.
Download all the patches and updates for your OS on a system that is not infected and burn them to a cd.
Transfer them to the system you are rebuilding and apply them before reattaching the system to the network.
Download and update Internet Explorer in the same way if possible. If not, when you connect to the network download patches for this as soon as you can. This should be done immediately upon connecting to the network or cable modem after updating the antivirus virus definitions.

Get a good virus checking program. Schedule it to update everyday first thing in the morning if you use your system during the day.
Set security on your system according to best practices at support.microsoft.com. Key word search would be "best practices

These are some tips for you. Hope this helps.
