Weird xp network problem..

OK, as long as all 3 computers are acknowledging the same master browser,
then
they'll all be able to see each other. When you get multiple master
browsers is
when you have problems.

That "error = 53" says that HP64 and Nebula can't resolve Eeyore name to
address. Check:
Misconfigured / overlooked firewalls:

Registry setting restrictanonymous:

If eeyore is not on, Chuck, is there a way xp determines which browser is
the master?

Is there a way to force the master browser as a specific machine?

Also, I could not find hklm\system in the registry.

Gary,

The browser election process is unbelievably complex. You can read these two
Microsoft documents:
<http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prcf_omn_mzox.asp>
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>
Or you can read my narrative version:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>

And I promise you, HKLM\System (aka HKey_Local_Machine\System) is there.

AH,, I searched for exactly "HKLM\System"

Oh, BTW, the wife sat there yesterday following the instructions literally
"to the letter" to get the ipconfig and browstat from her machine for me..
(I told her to follow the instructions exactly!), but on them, you never
mentioned to hit return after the instructions, so she just sat there
waiting for the first command to complete... LOL!

Ok, on hp64, the restrictanonymous is set at "0", but right after that,
there's also a restrictanymoussam set to "1"

Should that be there?

Also I DO have f-secure as my virus protaction.. could this be causing the
issues? (Firewall is OFF on all three systems.)
Checking other systems....

HeHe. Some instructions used to say "...do this then hit Any Key...". One day,
I got somebody complaining about their keyboard, and a few posts later they
pointed out that their keyboard lacked the Any Key.

But the blog is segmented heavily, so an additional hint in the Command Window
article shouldn't hurt.

The restrictanonymoussam is another key. Read the linked articles in my
article; I haven't found it to be relevant, in this case, but this is Microsoft
Windows - so I always like to Expect The Unexpected.

F-Secure may be another issue. It too may be part of a bundle.

Yeah I read that, and that's why I asked about it. BTW how do I find out if
I have a vpn endpoint? (does f-secure have it?)

Gary,

If you had a VPN (Virtual Private Network), you'd know about it. That was just
one example of a bundle. What is the exact name of the F-Secure License or the
Product which you installed?

It's Charter's high security suite. They are so kind to manditorily provide
it for all our systems, and to automatically charge us $5 each month for
it's use.

But there are no other high speed providers in our area, so we live with it.
(Besides, it's FAR better then Norton.)

If it's a suite, then it almost certainly involves a firewall. So there's a
good candidate for the problem (or a part of it) right there.

I'll double check each system and make sure it's off.

BTW I'd like to turn windows firewall on, but accepting permissions for
programs to connect. Would that cause any issues?

Gary,

Windows Firewall on, with File and Printer Sharing enabled for the subnet,
should allow file and printer sharing, pinging, browsing, and name resolution
between all computers. If you are absolutely sure that no other personal
firewalls remain on any computer. The combination of 2 firewalls (or portions
of 2 firewalls) has been one of the more common cause of various problems in
this forum. So be aware when you do that. But get file sharing working first
(in other words, get rid of all third party firewalls).

I did make sure all three system do not have f-secure's firewalls on.
Unfortunately, I don't recall if they were on or not before.. (I did it a
few hours ago, while working on other things.)

It does appear though that the file sharing is working properly though. I'm
not sure what I changed over the course of the last few days, but it's
working as I would expect it to.

Gary,

Well, if file sharing is now working, you're almost done. Test everything
thoroughly. Then go back, re install firewalls, set everything up properly, and
test as you do so. If you make a mistake, correct and retest.
