Weird thing happens when I open Excel

Whatever file I worked on last tries to open in Excel,
whether it's a spreadsheet or not. Then, if it's NOT a
spreadsheet I get a series of error messages as Excel
tries and fails to open the file. Strange! What's causing
this? (I've run a virus scan, spybot, and ad-aware, with
no result.)

I've repaired Office in the Add/Remove Programs section of
the Control Panel but it didn't help. I'm using Excel 2000
(9.0.2720). Thanks.
