weird tab order

I am using Excel 2002. I have a worksheet with several
merged cells. When I protect the sheet, and 'allow users
to select unlocked cells' I can use the tab button to
move through unlocked cells. The problem is this: a few
of those cells will be tabbed to more than once. For
example: Cells a1:a4 and cells b1:b4 are all unlocked.
From a1, hitting the tab button should cycle me throught
he cells in order (a1,a2,a3,a4,b1,b2,b3,b4,a1,a2 etc...).
However the problem i am having is that some of the cells
are tabbing through like:
a1,a2,a3,a4,a1,a2,a3,a4,b1,b2,b3,b4,a1,a2 etc. One row is
repeating itself. All problem cells are merged, but there
are many other merged cells without this problem.

I don't know why this is. any help would, umm.. help.

Merged cells are a problem.

Try unmerging the cells (in a test copy) and you'll see it works ok.

(The only solution I have is to stay away from merged cells--not very helpful,
huh?)

Instead of merging cells, have you tried the "Center Across Selection"
option ?

<Format> <Cells> <Alignment> tab,
Expand Horizontal window and it's the last option.

The appearence is just about identical to what you would get using merged
cells, although I don't know your requirements for wanting to use merge in
the first place.
