excel "IF" formula... if this possible ???

Hi,

Does anyone know if what I want to do is possible in excel.

I have multiple columns with weekly dates
eg
A1 =01/01/2011, B1 =500
A2 =15/01/2011, B2 =800
A3 =30/01/2011, B3 =1100
A4 =15/02/2011, B4 =1500

underneath these cells I have car odometer readings

I want to look at a particular month , say January in this case and return the value of B3-B1.to see how many km's the car has traveled in a month. ANSWER = 600kms

HELP !!!!
Can this be done ?
