weird symbols when saving

I use Windows XP, Word 2002. When I first save a document in a folder, and I
reopen the folder I see the name I saved it under plus the same name with the
first two letters of the name substituted with a ~$. After I finish the
document and close it, this disappears. I am wondering what this is, and if
it has anything to do with the runtime errors I am getting. I have searched
for a solution to the runtime error and cannot find the particular error
message I am getting on the Microsoft site.

Thanks Jeanne

Hi Jeanne,

The ~$ file is Word's "owner" file, which says the document is in use. If
two or more people try to open the same document at the same time, Word uses
that file to prevent that. It's discussed in this article about how Word
uses temporary files: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632

It's a normal part of Word's operation, so it doesn't have anything to do
with runtime errors. For troubleshooting those errors, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm.

We may be able to help more if you post the exact wording of the error
message.

Thanks Jay. I had posted this before. As you can see, I lost my addresses,
and it did not work. Yesterday it happened when I opened a file, so it is
just not when I hit print. I will go to the site suggested by Shauna to save
my autotext. I would really like to know what is going on, since the fix did
not work. Thanks, Jeanne

Runtime Error

Program: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 101\WINWORD.EXE

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an
unusal way. Please contact the application's support team for more
information.

I checked with our tech, but he wants me to click on help, then detect and
repair, but the last time I did this I lost all my addresses in AutoText (42
pages), and had to reenter them. When this error happens Word shuts down and
does not even recover the document (it was short so I didn't initially save
it).

Hi Jeanne,

The best I can tell you is what's already been suggested, to back up
your AutoTexts (which you should do anyway) and then try Detect and
Repair. The error message isn't specific enough to pinpoint the cause,
so you have to try the "blunt instrument" approach.

If that still doesn't work, go through the steps at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm.
